OK everyone, need any input that you have with regards to hunting public land in
Kansas. For the past several years, my brothers and I have made an annual trip to
North Central Kansas (Jewell County) to bow hunt WMA and WIHA land. We are thinking
about moving to a different location for next year, but haven't decided where to go,
we are thinking about moving south or east. In Jewell County, we know a gentleman
that had some cabins that he rented out that were surrounded by WMA, and in close
proximity to several WIHA tracts. We are looking for something similar wherever we
decide to go. We will need to find a reasonably priced place to stay for about a
week, and would like to be fairly close to WMA or WIHA land that is large enough to
accommodate at least 6 people. If you have any experience with Kansas, or know
someone that has a place that they rent out, please let me know. Any input is
helpful.

I know most of the Farmers Ive talked to in KS, Want as many deer killed as possible, if your willing to shoot does most will let you on their land to hunt especially with a bow, good luck.
Thanks Ray. We will be in Marshall county next year. Already pumped and still have to wait a year. What part of the state do you hunt?
south central, Harper County, Its been great hunting, but this year the poachers took a huge toll on the big bucks, Hopefully they will get that under control, Im thinking about archery hunting there next year, the last two weeks in Nov look good to me.
I have been doing some research on the area that we will be going next year, and get many different opinions, but a lot of people say that it is pretty pressured. I hope I am not making a mistake by leaving the area that we know pretty well. We just kind of wanted to branch out and get away from some of the other guys. As for archery, I think you you will love it. We always try to hit the pre rut before the hunting pressure gets too bad.
Hey Jarrod, thanks for the info! How did you go about asking the local farmers for permission to hunt their land? Did you wait till you were there, and knowck on doors, or did you contact the ahead of time? I am trying my hardest to do everything that I can to make sure this is a good trip next year. I am a little nervous, because we have done all the homework for Jewell County (where we hunted in the past), but I don't know know what to expect here. The biggest thing is concern about competition for hunting areas, I do not know how hard the public land is hunted there. Let me know if you find out what county you were hunting or what town you were near, it might be the same place.
Hey I have been reading this and I know it is about deer hunting but I was wondering about waterfowl hunting? anyone know of decent areas that arent overcrowded with hunters? I perfer hunting in fields but water works too. I have LOTS of FB geese and duck decoys, layout blinds, EVERYTHING needed except for a boat. Any info would be GREALTY apprecaited!! If anyone wants to go hunting out there let me know and I can pack up the trailer and head on out there. I usually hunt by myself cause I cant get anyone to go with me. I usually have 3-6 days off periods and Go hunting and most of my buddies have jobs, fam ect. Im a young ambitious guy loooking to meet good hunting buddies and hunt different areas. Let me know if any of you are interested!! Thanks. Jeremy
Jeremy Jensen: Central Kansas holds two awesome wetland marshes for waterfowl hunting. They are called Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira. You will mostly be hunting in or around water. The water is not over waist deep so you do not have to have a boat. The water has been froze up lately. You should plan a hunt here earlier in the year. Do you deer hunt in Iowa?
I have been hunting in Smith County for years, and this year was absolutely overrun the first 4 days of gun season. We have great friends who own a ton of land, but we were dealing with trespassers everyday. It was a little discouraging and sad, as most were out of state guys who were lost or blatantly trespassing. The awesome part about Smith county is that I believe it has the most walk in hunting land available, and I believe they put out a map each year. If you have time to scout there are some gems out there, and multiple monster bucks are killed on WHA ground each year. That part of Kansas has a tremendous population of deer. Sometimes it can be tough to find an older age class buck, but if you can make time to stay most of the season, or are willing to hunt hard with a bow or muzzleloader and be patient, there are some huge whitetails (and big mulie if you can get a tag). This year the landowners son and my father both killed deer over 170".

Hey Travis no problem, and yeah we were close to where you'll be hunting. We hunted in smith center and the amount of WIHA is huge there. Youll have to check out the zone for dates for they are different in and around the area. We never did run into anyone else while we were there, and yeah we knocked on doors while when we got there. That particular area is covered up with wildlife. We saw phesant, chuckers, prairie chickens, whitetail, duck, and mule deer. Awesome area to hunt. I hope that helps you out, if you need anything else just hollar. Good luck, maybe we'll get to hunt together later on.
