Last October, I had this deer and his wife around my makeshift groundblind for an entire afternoon. Several times, approaching so close, that I wondered if my safety was in Jeopardy. Suddenly, doe pee on your boots dosent seem like such a good idea when there is two flaring nostrils, and 9 tines at your feet trying to figure out what it is. Throughout the entire time, I was able to maintain my composure, and never spooked the two deer. This is every bowhunters dream to have to a great buck within range, never knowing that you're there, however I knew from the begining that this wasnt the deer I was after. This was in fact a deer that I hunted two years previous when he was in his prime, yet I never met up with him, and age had already started to take its toll on his body and headgear by last year. I was out now for the new kid on the block. A nice 11 point droptine (see other photos on my page) was on the prowl, something that had never been seen before on our family property, and something that I thought I would never have an opportunity to hunt again. So, with only one buck tag in my pocket due to county restrictions, I sat and watched. As darkness fell, I slipped out of the mesquites, and back to the truck, with the two deer none the wiser. I hunted the remainder of the season, but never encountered either of these bucks again. Finally, two weeks ago as September 1st rolled around, I tossed the old buck tag in the trash, still unused. Some people will probably call me an idiot, and some might praise my patience. But I guess thats what makes hunting so fun. I've now thought about the situation for almost a year, and if the same thing happens again in a few weeks, who knows what the results will be. I dont think I've decided on that answer yet.
