I'm looking into predator hunting a lot more this next year and need to find the best all around gun/ caliber for the job. From coyotes, to bobcats an red fox. But I need something that won't mangle an tear the hinds on the thin skin of a fox or a cat, but has the capability to drop yotes at a fair distance. So what's best, an why?

I have a lot of friends that shoot an AR-15 223 caliber and they love them. They are great guns because of the flat shooting capabilities. I have a savage 243 that I shoot and I love it because it is also a great shooting gun for distances and doesnt do a lot of damage to the hides.
i shoot a ruger 204. love that round flat and fast. i also use a 58 gr. 243 i have confirmed p-dog kills of upwards of 350 yards with that round.
I have three varmit calibers 22-250, .204, and 17 hmr out of all of them I like the .204 the best but I have found that the balistic tip ammo most guys will buy is really hard on hides, lots of shrapnel and usually does a lot of damage if you hit bone, I have a buddy that shoots a .243 with 90 grain solids and his load is deadly accurate sub MOA flat shooting and he has never ruined a hide, I seen a bobcat he shot in the back of the head at 90 yds and at first I thought man you just ruined a 350.00 bobcat we got up to the cat and low and behold all it did was put a hold in the back of its neck and came out the cats eye his taxidermist said it was one of the best cats he has gotten in and couldn't believe he shot it with a .243 so after seeing that I would like to switch calibers in favor of a .243 it is by far an all around gun you just are not allowed to carry one in Big game season with out a license because it is a legal big game caliber.
love my .204 ruger in a kimber varminter w/ nikon 10x24 scope...

i would have to say 22-250..thats the all around gun that has suited me the best threw the years.

I've been varmit hunting quite a while over the years. I have several guns I've hunted with 22 hornet,AR-15, Mini 14 and some more I don't remember. About 5 years ago I was looking around for a short rifle I could keep in my truck all of the time and still get it out the window quickly, the AR and the Mini just didn't work with the clip hanging down and the scope on top. I had a friend that worked at a gun shop near my house and I was asking him if he Knew of a short rifle that would be good for that. Yes, he named everything I had tried, then he suggested I buy a caliber of my choice and believe it or not have the barrel cut down shorter. Then I remembered that 22-250 I had bought 10 years earlier for prairie dogs on a lease I had back then and I hadn't had it out of the safe since. So after a little contiplating (just a little) about having it cut down, off to the gunsmith I went. Now its 6" shorter and my favorite gun of all. Still shoots as good as it ever did and right now its hanging on the ceiling of my truck. If you dont want to make a mess of the critters you can shoot solid bullets. So my best varmit gun would be a Remington left handed 22-250 with a 18" barrel, a 6.5x20 Leupold and a synthetic stock. Man is it sweet. If I can see it, I can hit! I love it!!!!! Sorry, didn't mean to write a book.
