My Ranch in South Texas is just under 700 acres. I'm surrounded by very large ranches. Some up to 20,000 acres and they are low fenced. My neighbor to the west of my place screwed up and killed, the first weekend, a 168 that was just 4 1/2 years old. I see deer all the time in the 140's-150's with an occasional 160. I'm still waiting on the book deer. The big deer are there but it's so thick with brush they have a tendency to get by. We have been managing this place to let the animals get some age. The bucks we are taking are ranging 7 1/2 years old and up. Of course there is an exception from time to time. All of the hunting is from box blinds overlooking senderos. Most shots are 100-200 yards but occasionally there's could be a poke out to several hundred yards. There are no motels close to my ranch in South Texas. I have a house on the place and that's were we'll stay when we get there. I'm 27 miles from pavement. It's in the middle of nowhere. Laredo is the closest city with motels and hotels. It's probably 45-50 miles away.
As for axis, I have them on my place in the Hill Country. It's a 160 acres. They are in and out of my place. Sometimes there here and some times they don't show up for some time. Generally, when I see a good axis on my place, we'll hunt for him then.
I wouldn't recommend Laredo as a honeymoon destination. Let me see if I can put this politically correct. I wouldn't live there or go there for my honeymoon mostly because of the drug traffic issues the border patrol and local police are dealing with.
When you get a chance to come whether it's this year or next, you and your wife are welcome to stay at my house. Let me know if there is any other info you need.
